We happy to announce that the Library will be visiting Durham this summer. We will be making the whole collection available for the people of the North-east to peruse.

This exhibition of zines, self-published, underground publications, invites you to share in the hugely diverse array of individual styles this media provokes. This is a fantastic opportunity to see the work of artists who are looking at alternative ways to share their talents. We will also be looking for new submissions to the library from the public.

This exhibition has been co-programmed by Empty Shop.

David Blandys work deals with his problematic relationship with popular culture, highlighting the slippage and tension between fantasy and reality in everyday life. Either as a white man mouthing the words to the underground soul classic "Is it because Im black" in "hollow bones" (2001), or being taught how to make art by the deceased martial arts star Bruce Lee in "emotional content" (2003), Blandy is searching for his cultural position in the world. He often uses humour to ask the difficult question of just how much the self is formed by the mass-media of records, films and television, and whether he has an identity outside that.

Steve Tillotson and Gareth Brookes began Banal Pig comics in the summer of 2005. Back in those days Gareth’s role was limited to occasionally writing one of his trademark rhymes for Steve’s comic Banal Pig. However one day he noticed he could draw quite well. After this nothing could stop him and Banal Pig now boasts more than a dozen mighty publications to its name!

Antoinette Burchill created Ms. Mischief as an alter-ego character in 2005, initially as a method to differentiate the mischief-based artworks from the paintings she was making at that time. She had been making mischievous artworks since 1993 and distinctly remembers the first misachievement, made aged about 8 on the kitchen table at home. Creating a distinct persona gave the body of work a renewed focus, clarity and energy.

As Salford Zine Library's permanent home, Islington Mill, is being refurbished over the summer, you won't be able to chance visit the collection. We're touring the library a couple of times which we will give you a full update of soon.

If you would still like to see the library's collection, email us and we will be able to arrange a visit.

If you are a gallery or institution in the surrounding areas of Salford and Manchester and would like to house the library for a short time over the summer, please do get in touch.
